Breath Awareness - Yoga Breathing Exercises

Learning to control one`s breath - breath awareness. This is an extremely important technique. It is always breath awareness and breathing exercises, due to which a person can control his mind, mental state, and emotions. Breath is the bridge between the body and mind. Yoga breathing is a powerful tool. The ultimate goal of most of the yoga breathing exercises is to regulate the mental state by favorably influencing the nervous system. Yoga breathing techniques facilitate concentration and meditation. Through yoga breathing you will gain conscious control over unconscious activities of the autonomic nervous system.
  • Focuses your attention on your breathing. Observe, visualize and mentally follow your smooth, deep diaphragmatic breathing. Changes of mental state, changes of feeling, changes of bodily sensations, and postures are registered immediately in the pattern of breathing. For example, fear and anger produce shallow breathing; sorrow produces uneven, spasmodic breathing. Positive emotions create regular produces uneven, spasmodic breathing. Positive emotions create regular breathing. Every change of mental state is reflected in the breath and also in the body. This is also true in reverse - by changing the breathing pat- tem we can also alter the emotions.

Mind Control: Unwanted Thoughts

Trying hard not to think about something almost guarantees that it will pop up in your consciousness.
Ever notice that the harder you try to stop thinking about something, the harder it is to forget?
it seems that the more effort you put into avoiding that thought, the faster it pops right back up in your consciousness.

It seems paradoxical, but in fact it makes sense. When you are actively avoiding a thought, one part of your brain is busily working to keep the upsetting thought at bay. It's searching out distractor —something else to focus on that will protect you from the idea you're trying to avoid.

At the same time, another part of the mental machinery has to keep checking to make sure that the job's being done properly. Inadvertently, this monitoring process calls attention to the unwanted thought, and makes you more vulnerable to the very ideas you're fleeing from.

"The funny thing is that when you're trying not to think about things, you have to remember what it is you aren't thinking about," says Wegner. "That memory, that part of your mind that's trying to keep it fresh, in a way is going to then activate thought."

In a sense, vigilantly struggling not to think about something or someone forces part of your brain to be on guard for that thought. Holding it there, even subconsciously, keeps the thought alive, and sometimes it escapes out of the prison it's being kept in and erupts into your active thoughts. This is mostly likely to happen when you're under stress, mentally overwhelmed or just plain exhausted.
"People have the intuition that you shouldn't think about a secret in front of the people you're trying to keep it secret from, because you might blurt it out. But keeping it a secret keeps it on the front burner of your mind," says Wegner.
It's a lot like trying to fall asleep, or forcing yourself to relax. The harder you try to nod off, the more likely it is you'll stay wide awake. If you try too hard to relax, you may get more anxious and wound up. The same problem crops up with concentration—trying to focus on something just makes distractions like your sneezing officemate or that annoying fluorescent light—fixture hum even more frustrating. In these cases, struggling for control only makes it worse.
"There are a whole range of cases when we become desperate to control our minds," he says. "The more we try to control them, the more they do what they want."

The answer: don't try so hard to control your thoughts! Instead, see if you can't get your secret preoccupation out in the open. Find a confidante to whom you can confess the idea—or perhaps write about it. Probably, says Wegner, you'll get bored of it fairly quickly, and the pesky thought will die away of its own accord.

Or, instead of following the impulse to get rid of it, says Wegner, just go with it. If you have a song in your head, trying to get rid of it is a great way to make sure it comes back. In this paradoxical therapy, you do the opposite of the thing you want to do. And that, he says, is what ends up being the cure.

Willpower

Willpower at WILL

The effort of will, which can also be called an expansion of willpower,
can be compared to opening the tap of an energy reserve; the
energy that flows out can be applied to an action, or to a thought or
feeling. This is the simplest way of describing how willpower works.

What conditions are necessary for bringing willpower into play?

They are, of course, the same in for persons suffering from insufficient
control as they are for normal persons, and can be considered
from two points of view.

First let’s look at the phenomenon of willpower from a mechanical
point of view
, which is the less important of the two, but which
should be understood.

This is what happens whenever willpower is used:

1. An effort of will is never possible when persons are exhaling. It
always happens during the pause after inhaling, as if the brain were
looking for a physical point of reference in the air contained in the
chest cavity.

2. There is a more or less pronounced increase in pulse rate, and
accelerated cerebral circulation.

3. An effort of will is almost always accompanied by a muscular
contraction.

Now let’s look at the psychological conditions, without which
there is no emission of willpower.

1. Knowing what you want.

2. The possibility of getting what you want.

3. The sincerity and truth of wanting.

1. Knowing what you want

No effort of will is possible without definitive thought. We have
to be precise about the nature and the goal of wanting. We often believe
we know what we want, without realizing that the idea we have
in mind is too vague and imprecise
. In such cases, the mind cannot
concentrate on the idea, which has no substance, and nothing is
achieved. We must get into the habit of accurately formulating exactly
what we want, in a clear sentence
. We often realize how vague
our desires are when we try to formulate them clearly. This indicates
that we often really don’t know what it is we want.

2.Possibility of wanting

This second factor is easily understood - it is futile to want what
is impossible. The mind knows when this is the case, and will not
make any real effort to achieve what it knows is impossible.

3.Sincerity and truth of wanting
Of the three psychological conditions involved in making an effort
of will, it is most often this last which is defective, and I believe I
am not exaggerating when I say that it is due to a lack of sincerity
that most efforts of will fail.

The causes are numerous: first there is paralyzing doubt, the fear
of making any kind of effort, which can even be seen as a form of selfimposed
suffering for daring to want something. Then we have the
class of persons (and there are many) who lie to themselves, some
unconsciously, others quite knowingly, but who because of weakness
or moral cowardice, eventually expose themselves. Persons who do
this unconsciously usually give up after “trying to want” which means
that although they think they may want something, they cannot make
the decision to actually want it. This can be easily corrected when
patients are made aware of their mistake.

So the first thing to aim for is sincerity - getting these people to be
honest with themselves - and then the effort of willpower will achieve
the desired results.

Sense Control

Mastering the mind through sense control is a complementary practice to regular mind control techniques. The mind and the senses have a constant interaction and if we master one of them, we gain control over the other one as well.

The mind and the senses are tight like a chariot is tight to its horses. If we control the horses we control the chariot. Likewise; if we control the senses we control the mind

It is like the senses are the Ice and the mind is the water (and at certain levels it becomes as vague as gass). Both are the same substance called H2O. Which form of H2O is easier to control, water or Ice? Ice is more physical, more concrete than water, which makes it easier to grab hold of. Control one of these forms and you control the H2O. Some may prefer training or controlling the mind itself rather than the senses, others may prefer sense control as a doorway to mastering the mind. Both are close relatives.

To Become the Creative Person

Who is the most creative person you know? What is it that makes them so creative? Is it their outlook on life? Is it the amount of ideas they come up with? Is it the number of new and varied creative projects they take on?
Whatever it is that makes them this creative, their position is about to be under threat.
Here are 5 tips to help YOU become the most creative person:
  1. Creativity is a way of being, not just doing. Do you see "being creative" as something you put on like a uniform only on the occasions when you're actually making something? This perception can mean, like a uniform, you feel you can detach from your creativity and put it to one side while you get on with the rest of life. In fact, creativity is more like your skin. It's always there with you in everything you do. Once you begin to accept this, you can let it seep into everything you do - you can truly be, think, say and do creatively - instead of putting the "uniform" on only once in a while.
  2. All the ideas you can handle. Having a steady flow of ideas is key to being highly creative. We're all capable of generating this stream of ideas, but only if we capture them does it feel we're creative. The mistake most of us make is to think we'll remember every great idea we have in the shower or supermarket. Then when we don't, it feels like those ideas never occurred in the first place. Find a way of recording your ideas - a notebook, camera or voice recorder - and you'll find the amount that you have soars.
  3. Creating regularly to keep the flow. The more creative you are, the more creative you are. It's only by creating regularly - setting aside time each and every day - that you can truly let your creativity reach the kind of free flow it's capable of. It takes many times more energy to start a body in motion than it does to keep it steadily rolling along. That's not just a law of physics, it's a law of creativity too. Create every day, even for just 15 minutes and notice your overall creativity levels dramatically increase.
  4. Acknowledge your own creativity. If you don't believe you're creative, it will always be a struggle against the tide to reach any consistent creativity. Fortunately, this is nearly always about perception, not raw facts. Make a list of all the ways you're creative each and every day - the tiny details, like how you coordinate your wardrobe, arrange your desk, conjure up meals, deal with work and family problems. Creativity is not just about making art, it's in everything you do. Recognise how creative you already are!
  5. Keeping the inner critic at bay. Many of us get to a crucial point in creating a new project only to be floored by that old "friend", our inner critic. What we don't realise is that our inner critic is just trying to protect us, to save us from disappointment. Its intentions are positive, even if its methods aren't pretty. Once we realise this, we see our inner critic in a whole different light. Thank your inner critic for its kind consideration, then tell it you're going to carry on and create anyway. Then carry on and create anyway.
You can choose any of these areas to help you be more creative. Then, with that in place, move on and try another, and another. Before too long, you'll realise you've become as creative as anyone you know!
